The United Nations has raised urgent concerns over escalating violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where advanced warfare methods and a deepening humanitarian crisis are endangering millions.

Briefing the United Nations Security Council, Vivian van de Perre of MONUSCO highlighted the increasing deployment of offensive drones and GPS signal jamming in urban areas. Incidents near Kisangani’s Bangoka Airport and across Goma have heightened fears over the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure.

Access limitations are further complicating the situation, restricting independent monitoring of human rights abuses. In territories held by the M23, journalists and activists are reportedly subjected to intimidation and arbitrary detention.

The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with an estimated 26.6 million people facing food insecurity—nearly a quarter of the population.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions are rising as Kinshasa accuses Rwanda of backing M23 offensives. Zénon Ngay Mukongo described the situation as a grave violation of national sovereignty, citing mounting civilian casualties and large-scale displacement.
