At least 14 soldiers were killed in northern Burkina Faso when terrorists struck a military post in Bagade on Saturday, according to security officials. Al-Qaeda’s Sahel branch, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), claimed responsibility for the assault.

Authorities said many attackers were “neutralised” in a counter-offensive, though reports suggest nearly 20 soldiers and civilian volunteer fighters (VDPs) may have died. WAMAPS, a Sahel-focused journalist group, noted JNIM released a disturbing video showing dead soldiers, some burned alive.

Burkina Faso has faced extremist violence for over a decade, particularly in the north. After a brief lull, attacks have surged again. In February, JNIM claimed responsibility for several assaults that killed more than 130 people in just 10 days, according to ACLED.

The Sahel region—Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali—accounted for nearly half of all deaths linked to violent extremism worldwide in 2025, according to the Global Terrorism Index. The UN has warned that the withdrawal of these military-run states from ECOWAS has weakened regional coordination, complicating collective responses to escalating extremism.
