Türkiye has reaffirmed its support for Libya’s unity and stability following Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s high-level visit to Libya that included meetings with political and military leaders in both Tripoli and Benghazi.
Foreign Minister Fidan described his visit as a concrete manifestation of Ankara’s “One Libya” policy, which makes no distinction between the North African country’s western, eastern, and southern regions.
In Tripoli, Fidan and his delegation met with Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, the prime minister of the Government of National Unity.
Their discussions covered bilateral relations, Libya’s political process, regional developments, and security issues.
Security and defence cooperation
The Turkish delegation also held talks with Mohammed Al Menfi, the president of the Libyan Presidential Council, and Mohammed Mitig Takala, president of the High State Council.
Further meetings in the Libyan capital addressed security and defence cooperation with National Security Adviser Ibrahim Dbeibeh, Acting Defence Minister Abdul Salam Zubi, Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi, Chief of General Staff Salahaddin Al Namroush, and Mahmoud Hamza, the head of military intelligence at the Defence Ministry.
In Benghazi, Fidan held consultations with Khalifa Haftar, General Commander of the Libyan National Army, as well as General Saddam Haftar, Deputy Commander of the Libyan National Army, House of Representatives President Aguila Saleh, and Bilkasim Haftar, the president of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund.
The discussions focused on Libya’s political and security agenda and opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
‘Free, secure, and prosperous future’
Türkiye said security and defence cooperation with Libya remained a strategic component of its efforts to support the country’s stability and contribute to wider regional security.
As part of the mission, the Turkish officials also visited the Turkish Armed Forces Libya Task Group Command in Tripoli.
“Türkiye does not see Libya’s peace and stability as separate from its own stability,” Fidan said, emphasising Ankara’s support for Libyans’ efforts to build a “free, secure and prosperous” future.
Türkiye said it would continue, in line with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vision, to support dialogue and cooperation between Libya’s western and eastern regions and contribute to the country’s peace, stability and prosperity.
