Somalia’s military says it carried out targeted airstrikes against the militant group al-Shabab near the city of Baidoa, killing 12 fighters and injuring several others.

The strikes happened early Monday in an area just outside the city, with support from international partners. Officials say the goal is to weaken the group’s ability to carry out attacks and improve security in the country.

Baidoa, located southwest of Mogadishu, is an important administrative center, making the surrounding region strategically significant.

The Somali government emphasized that these operations are part of a broader campaign to eliminate terrorism and bring long-term stability. This effort is supported by missions like the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, whose mandate was recently extended by the UN.

For over 16 years, al-Shabab has carried out attacks across Somalia, targeting civilians, officials, and security forces. In recent months, military pressure on the group has increased, with more coordinated operations aimed at pushing them back.
