Türkiye has announced preparations to activate a Patriot air defence system in Malatya, strengthening the protection of its airspace as part of coordinated security efforts with NATO amid growing regional tensions.
The Ministry of National Defence stated that the Turkish Armed Forces remain fully committed to safeguarding the country and its citizens, highlighting that additional precautions are being taken to secure national borders and airspace in close consultation with NATO allies.
The deployment forms part of NATO’s reinforced air and missile defence posture in the region, complementing Türkiye’s national defence strategy. Malatya already hosts a NATO early-warning radar station, installed in 2012, designed to detect potential ballistic missile threats.
The move follows recent missile interceptions near Turkish airspace, including a missile reportedly launched from Iran that was intercepted earlier this week by NATO air defence systems.
These developments come amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory drone and missile attacks carried out by Tehran across several countries in the region.
Ankara reaffirmed that it will continue close coordination with NATO and allied partners, maintaining defence readiness at the highest level to protect national security and support regional stability.
