Officials and business leaders in South Africa and Kenya are welcoming a major trade move by China that will remove tariffs on goods from 53 African countries starting May 1.
This means many African products can now enter the Chinese market without extra taxes, making them cheaper and more competitive. Leaders say this could significantly boost exports and open up new business opportunities—especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.
In South Africa, Trade Minister Parks Tau called it a “fantastic opportunity,” saying the country plans to fully take advantage of the policy. Products like citrus fruits, wine, and aloe-based goods are expected to benefit the most.
Entrepreneurs also see big gains. Lower costs could mean higher profits and more chances to collaborate with Chinese partners, especially in technology and production.
Meanwhile, in Nairobi, Kenyan officials described the policy as offering “infinite opportunities.” Josphat Maikara highlighted that stronger trade ties with China could help improve product quality and strengthen the country’s business environment during uncertain global economic times.
The initiative follows a broader vision announced by Xi Jinping, aiming to deepen economic cooperation between China and Africa through long-term partnerships and expanded trade access.
Overall, this zero-tariff policy is expected to reshape trade across the continent, making it easier for African countries to grow their economies and strengthen global connections.
