In everyday terms: Switzerland has decided to keep payments for the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system on hold until Washington provides firm delivery dates and payment schedules. The U.S. has delayed shipments to prioritize Ukraine, which Switzerland says changes the original contract and raises financial concerns.
Bern has already stopped payments into the U.S.-managed defense fund that covers multiple projects, including F-35A jets and spare parts for F/A-18s. Officials warn that if the fund runs low, projects could be suspended or canceled. Switzerland insists that its top priorities—like securing F-35A jets and maintaining its F/A-18 fleet—must not be jeopardized.
The government expects clarification from the U.S. in the coming weeks and will present proposals by June. At the same time, Switzerland is exploring alternatives, possibly a European-made long-range air defense system, with a final decision expected later this summer.
