South African soldiers, backed by police, have dismantled illegal gold mining operations near Johannesburg, forcing miners to flee and abandon their equipment. Generators, drills, and makeshift living supplies were seized in Randfontein, about 40 km west of the city.
Illegal mining often carried out by heavily armed syndicates and informal miners known as zama zamas is widespread across the country’s 6,000 abandoned mine shafts. Authorities estimate around 30,000 illegal miners operate nationwide, costing South Africa over $4 billion annually in lost gold revenue.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the military deployment will be paired with stronger anti-gang units and specialized task teams to target the leadership, finances, and weapons fueling these criminal networks. The move reflects growing urgency to tackle crime syndicates and protect communities living near abandoned mine.
