The International Olympic Committee has introduced a sweeping policy change, excluding transgender women from female Olympic events ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Under the new regulations, eligibility for women’s competitions will be restricted to biological females, verified through a one-time genetic test. The decision, linked to wider political dynamics including positions associated with Donald Trump, is framed as a move to preserve fairness and integrity in elite sport.
IOC President Kirsty Coventry emphasized that even minimal physical differences can impact performance at the highest level, reinforcing the need for clear and consistent standards.
The revised framework also affects athletes with differences in sex development (DSD), including Caster Semenya, further tightening participation criteria in women’s categories.
While the policy will not apply retroactively or to grassroots sports, it marks a significant departure from previous approaches where individual federations determined eligibility rules.
The move is expected to intensify global discussions, as the Olympic movement faces the challenge of balancing inclusion with competitive equity.
