Cyril Ramaphosa officially welcomed the new US ambassador, Brent Bozell, in a formal ceremony as relations between South Africa and the United States remain strained.

Bozell, who began his post earlier this year, said he has quickly grown fond of South Africa and hopes to strengthen ties between the two nations through shared values and mutual respect. However, his arrival has been controversial after earlier public comments criticizing South Africa’s racial policies and legal decisions.

President Ramaphosa used the occasion to stress that diplomats should respect the sovereignty of host countries and raise concerns privately rather than through public criticism. His message appeared aimed at recent tensions caused by outspoken diplomatic remarks.

Relations between Pretoria and Washington have worsened in recent years over several disputes, including South Africa’s legal action against Israel, disagreements involving Donald Trump’s claims about white Afrikaners, and criticism over South African domestic policies.

Despite these tensions, the two countries remain economically connected, with the US being one of South Africa’s most important trade partners and home to hundreds of American businesses operating there.

The ambassador’s arrival signals an effort to repair and strengthen ties, but major political disagreements still remain unresolved.
