A Nigerian man, Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko, has been crowned “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London” in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, igniting a heated dispute. The coronation, held on March 14, 2026, declared him the Igbo traditional ruler of East London.

South African authorities swiftly condemned the move, warning it undermines national sovereignty. Zolile Williams, Eastern Cape’s governance chief, called it “shocking” and vowed legal action. The amaRharhabe Kingdom, led by King Jonguxolo Vululwandle Sandile, rejected the coronation, stressing that no such kingship exists within its structures.

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders described the event as a “serious disregard” for customary systems. Deputy Minister Prince Zolile Burns Ncamashe labeled it “deeply disrespectful,” confirming Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria was engaged for resolution. Nigeria’s envoy Alexander AJ Oditah clarified Eziko “is not a king and he is not recognised anywhere in Nigeria.”

The incident has spotlighted the Nigerian Igbo community in South Africa, where tens of thousands live and work. The controversy underscores tensions between cultural identity and South Africa’s legal framework for traditional leadership.
