Sudan is looking to Türkiye to play a greater role in bringing international attention to its civil war, with a senior Sudanese official saying Ankara is uniquely positioned to raise awareness of the conflict and its regional implications.
Amgad Fareid Eltayeb, political and foreign affairs adviser to the chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, said Türkiye’s support for Sudan reflects deep historical ties between the two countries, but stressed that Khartoum hopes to see stronger engagement.
“Türkiye is in a special position to help bring the facts about Sudan’s conflict to the international agenda because of its relations with both the Muslim world and NATO countries,” Eltayeb told Anadolu.
The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has entered its fourth year, triggering what aid agencies describe as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
Eltayeb urged the international community to recognise the RSF as a terrorist organisation, arguing that the conflict is no longer a political struggle between rival leaders but a broader threat to Sudan’s sovereignty and stability.
He accused the group of committing unprecedented crimes and said some regional actors have backed the RSF, turning the conflict into a proxy war with consequences extending beyond Sudan’s borders.
According to Eltayeb, designating the RSF as a terrorist organisation would limit support networks that help sustain the conflict and contribute to regional insecurity across the Horn of Africa, the Red Sea basin, the Great Lakes region, and the Sahel.
Eltayeb said preserving Sudan’s state institutions is essential not only for the country’s future but also for regional and European stability, warning that the collapse of the Sudanese state could leave millions vulnerable to displacement and statelessness.
He said Sudanese citizens want security, stability and the restoration of normal life, adding that a democratic transition can only take shape once those foundations are secured.
While welcoming international support, Eltayeb stressed that any political initiative should be carried out with the participation of the Sudanese people and reflect their aspirations for the country’s future.
