Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency says it carried out coordinated operations in the Middle Shabelle, killing more than 33 members of the militant group al-Shabaab.
According to the agency, the operations targeted hideouts used by senior militant leaders and fighters who were reportedly planning attacks. Several locations and vehicles used for logistics and transport were also destroyed.
NISA said intelligence indicated that around 90 militants had gathered in the area to prepare coordinated activities aimed at threatening national security.
The agency said the strikes significantly weakened the group’s operational capacity and disrupted its ability to mobilize fighters.
African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia has been supporting Somali forces in ongoing counterterrorism operations, which have intensified in recent months.
United Nations Security Council recently renewed the mission’s mandate, extending international support for Somalia’s fight against the insurgency.
Al-Shabaab has been waging an insurgency against the Somali government for more than 16 years, carrying out repeated attacks on civilians, security forces, and officials.
