Denis Sassou-N’Guesso has been sworn in for a fifth term after securing a landslide victory with 94.9 percent of the vote. Speaking at his inauguration in Brazzaville, the 82-year-old leader pledged to prioritize economic development, job creation, and infrastructure expansion.

Sassou-N’Guesso emphasized plans to revitalize the national economy by strengthening key sectors such as agriculture and industry, aiming to reduce dependency on oil and gas revenues. He also highlighted the need to improve living conditions and expand opportunities for the country’s growing youth population.

The election, officially marked by a turnout exceeding 84 percent, was described by observers, including the African Union, as peaceful and orderly. However, opposition candidates disputed the results, alleging irregularities and low participation.

A dominant figure in Congolese politics, Sassou-N’Guesso first came to power in 1979, briefly left office in the early 1990s, and returned following a civil war in 1997. His long tenure continues to shape the political landscape of Republic of the Congo.

Despite steady economic activity driven by oil and gas, the country faces significant challenges. According to the World Bank, public debt stands at over 94 percent of GDP, while more than half of the population lives in poverty. Youth unemployment remains a critical issue, with nearly half the population under the age of 18.

Critics argue that economic gains have been undermined by corruption and the mismanagement of state resources, pointing to investigations involving senior officials. Nonetheless, the government maintains that ongoing investments in infrastructure and diversification will drive future growth.

As Sassou-N’Guesso begins his new term, expectations remain high amid persistent concerns over inequality, governance, and long-term economic stability.
