After decades in exile, Sahrawi refugees in southern Algeria remain steadfast in their demand for independence and self-determination for Western Sahara. The Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, continues to reject Morocco’s autonomy proposal, even as the United Nations and many world powers endorse Rabat’s sovereignty plan. In Tindouf’s camps, home to over 170,000 refugees, residents mark the 50th anniversary of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic with vows never to abandon their struggle. “We will never give up on the independence of our country,” said one elder. Life in the camps remains harsh, dependent on humanitarian aid, but refugees insist their cause is one of decolonization and an “inalienable right” to self-determination.
