Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed the new supreme leader of Iran following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian state media.

The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, the institution responsible for selecting the country’s highest political and religious authority. With the appointment, Mojtaba becomes the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic since the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Born on September 8, 1969, in Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei grew up in one of Iran’s most influential political families. He later pursued religious studies in Qom, a major centre of Shia theological education, where he reportedly taught advanced jurisprudence in religious seminaries.

Although he has never held elected office, Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered an influential figure within Iran’s political establishment and maintains close ties with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. His limited public profile and behind-the-scenes influence have contributed to his reputation as one of the most discreet yet powerful actors in Iranian politics.

He is married to Zahra Haddad-Adel, the daughter of conservative politician Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel. Several members of the Khamenei family were reportedly killed in a recent strike targeting the family residence in Tehran.

Mojtaba Khamenei assumes leadership at a time of heightened regional tensions and political uncertainty. His appointment also comes despite longstanding ideological resistance within Iran’s political system to hereditary-style succession.

The leadership transition places the new supreme leader at the centre of an increasingly complex geopolitical crisis as tensions across the Middle East continue to escalate.
