Former Senegalese president Macky Sall is pushing a strong message of peace as he competes to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Speaking during his audition, he emphasized that diplomacy not conflict is the only way forward in today’s tense global climate.
Referring to rising tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, Sall supported ongoing mediation efforts, particularly those led by Pakistan, and urged all sides to maintain ceasefires. His message was simple: the world needs fewer weapons and more dialogue.
Sall also highlighted a broader vision arguing that peace, economic growth, human rights, and security are all connected. He stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable groups, especially women and young people.
He is one of several candidates being considered for the top UN role. Others include Michelle Bachelet, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and Rebeca Grynspan. The current UN chief, António Guterres, was selected nearly a decade ago.
However, the selection process comes at a difficult time. Deep divisions among major global powers have made it harder for the UN to act effectively. The United Nations Security Council, once a key force in resolving conflicts, has struggled to respond to major crises in places like Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran.
In simple terms, while candidates like Sall are calling for unity and peace, the UN itself is facing serious challenges in delivering on its mission.
