Former FBI Director James Comey appeared in a federal court in Virginia after being charged over a social media post showing seashells arranged to form the numbers “86 47.”
Prosecutors say the numbers could be interpreted as a threat against Donald Trump, with “86” sometimes meaning “to get rid of someone” and “47” referring to Trump as the 47th president. Comey, however, strongly denies this, saying the post was harmless and that he is innocent.
During a short hearing, the judge allowed Comey to remain free without bail for now. He is expected to formally respond to the charges at a later court date in North Carolina.
The charges accuse Comey of making and sharing threats against the president. If proven, they are serious federal offenses. Still, Comey insists the case is unfair and politically motivated, saying it goes against the values of justice and independence in the legal system.
This is not his first legal issue—an earlier case accusing him of lying to Congress was dismissed. His legal team had argued that prosecution was driven by personal and political reasons.
The case is likely to draw national attention as it touches on free speech, political tensions, and the limits of online expression.
