An unnamed Iranian official on Tuesday told Japan’s Kyodo News that Tehran has offered to “reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States takes initial steps towards easing military pressure.”
Anadolu could not independently confirm the veracity of the statement.
The proposal has “already been conveyed to Washington through mediators,” the report said.
It “calls for renewed talks aimed at reaching a permanent end to hostilities between the two countries,” the Iranian official said.
He ruled out a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York this week.
“There is a possibility of moving towards an agreement,” the Iranian official said.
Washington must demonstrate “seriousness and commitment” if diplomacy is to advance, he added.
The development comes amid continued tensions between the US and Iran, as their negotiations remain stalled over disagreements concerning navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for energy and commodity supplies.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched a war against Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with strikes on Israel and other regional countries hosting US assets.
After agreeing to a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire in April, the US and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June, which gave two sides 60 days to discuss a long-term agreement.
But the two sides soon engaged in retaliatory attacks, and the US reimposed its military blockade of Iranian ports while Tehran closed the Hormuz.
