At least 30 people have died after severe flooding struck the Gamo region in southern Ethiopia, following days of intense rainfall that devastated several communities.
Local authorities said the fatalities occurred mainly in the Degama areas, where heavy downpours caused rivers to overflow and flood nearby settlements.
The disaster comes amid widespread flooding across East Africa, where extreme weather has recently caused significant damage. In neighbouring Kenya, dozens of people were also killed after torrential rains hit Nairobi and other regions.
Climate experts say such events are becoming increasingly frequent in the region, with studies showing a rise in both severe rainfall and prolonged droughts over the past two decades.
Scientists warn that human-driven climate change is intensifying extreme weather patterns, increasing the likelihood of destructive floods and other natural disasters across East Africa.
