Kenya’s flood death toll has reached 62 as heavy rainfall continues to affect several regions during the early stage of the country’s long rains season, authorities said on Friday.
According to the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the victims include 46 men, eight women and eight children, while emergency teams remain deployed to conduct rescue operations and damage assessments in affected areas.
The capital Nairobi has recorded the highest number of fatalities after days of intense rainfall flooded roads, homes and businesses across several neighborhoods.
Other regions have also reported deaths linked to the flooding. Officials said the Eastern region recorded 17 fatalities, while the Rift Valley reported seven. The Nyanza and coastal regions each reported two deaths, and the Central region recorded one fatality.
Authorities said government agencies and emergency responders are continuing rescue, evacuation and relief efforts to support displaced families.
Residents in flood-prone areas, especially near riverbanks and low-lying neighborhoods, have been urged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines as heavy rains and flash floods are expected to persist.
