The EU’s long‑awaited trade agreement with Mercosur entered provisional force on May 1, marking a milestone in efforts to deepen ties with Latin America.
Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the move will deliver “real and visible” benefits, including falling tariffs, expanded market opportunities, and greater investor confidence. The agreement, covering more than 700 million people, has been in negotiation for over two decades and is billed as one of the largest free trade areas in the world.
Officials say provisional application will allow lawmakers to assess its impact with evidence‑based oversight. However, the pact continues to face opposition from civil society and some EU governments, reflecting ongoing debates about its environmental and economic implications.
