Egypt has imposed a new curfew requiring shops, restaurants, and malls to close by 9 pm on weekdays and 10 pm on weekends, aiming to cut soaring energy costs. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the measure will last one month, but business owners warn it could hurt sectors reliant on evening activity.
Bazaar owner Ahmed Ali argued the rule is “unreasonable,” noting tourists often arrive late and stay out past midnight. Jewelry trader Remon Wagieh added that Egypt’s nightlife is central to tourism, unlike other countries where visitors don’t go out at night.
Officials insist key tourist destinations will remain unaffected, but many fear the restrictions will dampen spending and weaken Cairo’s vibrant evening economy. Rising fuel costs linked to regional instability have doubled Egypt’s energy bill, prompting the government to act.
