Botswana has firmly pushed back against allegations that it hosts a United States military base, stressing that national security debates must be grounded in verified and credible information.
Speaking from the capital, Gaborone, government spokesperson Tuduetso Mokgosi made it clear that the Thebephatshwa Air Base remains a sovereign installation under the full authority of the Botswana Defence Force. He emphasized that all operations conducted at the facility are exclusively aligned with Botswana’s national interests.
Authorities underlined the strategic importance of the base, pointing to its contribution to emergency response readiness, regional peacekeeping efforts, and humanitarian missions, alongside maintaining the operational strength of the armed forces.
Mokgosi also issued a strong warning on the dangers of misinformation, noting that unsubstantiated claims—especially when amplified internationally—risk fueling unnecessary tensions. He reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to regional cooperation, stability, and constructive dialogue with its neighbors.
