In Kenya’s capital, waste pickers at the Dandora dump are being trained in sustainable practices through a board game designed by the Mazingira Yetu Organization. The game uses dice, cards, and Sheng slang to make complex ideas about the circular economy accessible. Topics include recycling techniques, health insurance, and collective bargaining, with players cross‑checking answers against a reference booklet. Waste pickers say the lessons are practical: plastics can be reused for planting or storage, while discarded batteries can be sold to recyclers. The Circularity Gap Report highlights the importance of such efforts, noting that less than 10% of global material use is circular, yet waste pickers recover significant volumes. With Kenya generating 22,000 tonnes of waste daily, organizers hope the program will improve livelihoods, reduce environmental damage, and shift perceptions of waste pickers as key actors in urban sustainability.
