In Nigeria, the trial of about three dozen military officers accused of planning a coup is set to continue next month. The hearings are taking place in Abuja, but they are being held behind closed doors, meaning the public and media cannot attend.

The officers are accused of planning to overthrow the government during Independence Day celebrations on October 1, 2025. A major parade expected to be attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was suddenly cancelled at the time, raising suspicions.

At first, authorities denied that any coup attempt existed. However, earlier this year, the military confirmed that several officers would be tried in a court martial for their alleged involvement.

At the same time, a separate civilian trial is ongoing. Six people, including a retired general and a police officer, are accused of treason and terrorism linked to the same plot. They have all denied the charges. Another suspect, Timipre Sylva, is accused of helping hide the plan and is still being sought.

Nigeria has a long history of military coups, especially after gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. However, the country has remained under civilian rule since 1999. This case is therefore being closely watched, as it raises concerns about stability within the armed forces.

In response to the situation, President Tinubu has already reshuffled top military leaders, likely to strengthen control and prevent future угроз.
