Niger’s Minister of Public Health, Garba Hakimi, has led a high-level field mission in the Tillabéri region to evaluate the implementation of the national health development plan (PDSS 2022–2026). Conducted in collaboration with technical and financial partners, the mission focused on assessing progress, identifying challenges, and reinforcing healthcare delivery systems.
The delegation visited multiple health facilities across districts such as Ballayara and Filingué, reviewing infrastructure, medical equipment, and service functionality. Particular attention was given to operating theaters, referral systems, and the availability of essential medicines and vaccination supplies. Officials reported overall positive indicators, including functional solar-powered cold chains and strong community engagement.
Key partners, including World Health Organization, UNICEF, and UNFPA, played a central role in supporting the region, notably through donations of medical supplies and ongoing technical assistance.
During the mission, authorities also launched vaccination campaigns as part of the African Vaccination Week, alongside efforts to combat polio. The minister highlighted the importance of coordinated action to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children and pregnant women.
The visit resulted in concrete commitments to strengthen healthcare services, including the provision of new medical equipment, the deployment of additional midwives, the training of community health workers, and the expansion of mobile clinics. Rehabilitation projects, such as upgraded maternity wards and surgical units, were also officially handed over.
Beyond infrastructure, the mission emphasized better resource management, improved coordination with partners, and the continued implementation of policies such as reduced healthcare costs in public facilities.
Overall, the initiative reflects Niger’s broader efforts to rebuild and modernize its health system, particularly in regions facing security and development challenges, while reinforcing resilience through community involvement and international cooperation.
