The European Commission has announced plans to suspend—or possibly cancel—a €2 million grant to the Venice Biennale after the event allowed the Russian pavilion to reopen.
At a briefing in Brussels, spokesperson Thomas Regnier confirmed that officials had already sent a formal notice to the Biennale. The funding in question was part of a three-year grant, but now its future is uncertain.
The decision comes after strong reactions from top EU officials, including Henna Virkkunen and Kaja Kallas, who oppose the return of Russian participation.
In simple terms, the EU is using financial pressure to show disapproval of including Russian artists, reflecting broader political tensions. What might seem like an art-world decision has turned into a geopolitical issue, where culture and international relations are closely linked.
