Germany has withdrawn its planned intervention in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). A Foreign Ministry spokesperson explained that Berlin is now itself a party to contentious proceedings, after Nicaragua filed a lawsuit accusing Germany of aiding genocide by supplying weapons to Israel.
South Africa brought the case in December 2023, alleging Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide. Israel denies the charge. Germany initially rejected the claims as “baseless” and announced it would intervene on Israel’s behalf, but has now shifted focus to defending itself against Nicaragua’s complaint.
Berlin insists Nicaragua’s allegations are unfounded, but said it will await the ICJ’s ruling. The move underscores the growing legal and diplomatic fallout from the Gaza war, where Israel’s attacks have killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and injured many more.
