Nigerian soldiers have killed at least 60 suspected militants after repelling a coordinated attack on a military base in Borno State, the army has confirmed.

The overnight assault targeted the 68 Battalion in Mallam Fatori, near the border with Niger. Troops, supported by air power, mounted a strong counteroffensive, neutralizing dozens of attackers, including several senior commanders.

Military officials believe the assailants were linked to Boko Haram, noting that the group advanced on foot while deploying armed drones—an indication of increasingly sophisticated tactics.

The attack follows closely on the heels of deadly suicide bombings in Maiduguri, the state capital, which left at least 23 people dead and many others injured, pointing to a renewed surge in violence across the region.

Authorities also reported that an Al Qaeda-affiliated group carried out multiple attacks on military positions earlier in the week, suggesting a broader escalation involving coordinated militant activity.

Nigeria’s insurgency, now spanning more than a decade, has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced approximately two million people, according to United Nations estimates.
