Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for deeper defence cooperation with South Africa, warning that both nations must strengthen their military capabilities to avoid potential external threats.

Speaking during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Brasília, Lula stressed the importance of combining the two countries’ industrial and technological potential in order to develop joint defence production rather than relying heavily on foreign arms suppliers.

Ramaphosa acknowledged Brazil’s advanced capabilities in defence and aviation technologies, noting that both nations have much to gain from increased collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The initiative comes as defence ministers from both countries prepare to discuss a formal cooperation agreement, aimed at strengthening strategic ties between the two BRICS members.

Lula also highlighted that South America traditionally positions itself as a region of peace, emphasizing that defence policies should serve primarily as a deterrent rather than an instrument of aggression.
