Zambian health authorities have reported two deaths and 17 new cholera cases within the past 24 hours, raising concerns over the spread of the disease and prompting renewed calls for public vigilance.

According to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 14 of the new cases were recorded in Lusaka, while three others were identified in Mpulungu district, located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia.

Health officials confirmed that both fatalities occurred in the Kanyama area of Lusaka, one of the communities currently affected by the outbreak.

Speaking on state television, Doreen Shempela, Director of Public Health Policy, Diplomacy and Communication at ZNPHI, said authorities are working with partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, disease surveillance and treatment efforts.

Officials warned that cholera outbreaks often intensify during the rainy season, urging citizens to adopt improved hygiene and sanitation practices to help prevent further spread of the disease.
