A senior US counterterrorism official has resigned in protest against the ongoing conflict involving Iran, declaring the war strategically unnecessary and unjustified.

Joseph Kent, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, formally stepped down in a letter to President Donald Trump, stating he could no longer support the war “in good conscience.” He argued that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and suggested that the path to conflict had been shaped by external pressure and pro-war lobbying.

Kent, a former Green Beret with multiple combat deployments, is the first senior figure within the administration to resign over the issue, signaling rare internal dissent. He warned that misinformation had significantly influenced both public opinion and policy decisions, contributing to the escalation.

Drawing comparisons with past US interventions, particularly the Iraq war, Kent highlighted the long-term human and economic consequences of decisions rooted in flawed assessments. He cautioned that the current conflict risks repeating those costly errors.

In closing, Kent emphasized that he could not support a war that, in his view, does not serve the national interest and could once again place American lives at unnecessary risk.
