South African soldiers were deployed in Johannesburg on Wednesday as part of government efforts to support police in combating gang violence and illegal mining, two of the country’s most pressing security concerns.
Troops were spotted in the Riverlea suburb, marking the first major deployment since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced plans to involve the military in supporting law enforcement operations. In his recent national address, Ramaphosa warned that organized crime poses a serious threat to South Africa’s democracy and economic stability.
Authorities have not yet provided detailed information about the scale or duration of the military deployment.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime, with an average of about 60 murders reported each day. Many of these killings are linked to drug gang conflicts in Cape Town and violent incidents connected to illegal mining activities in Gauteng province, where Johannesburg is located.
The deployment is part of broader efforts by the government to restore security and stabilize communities affected by organized criminal networks.
