Somalia has taken a major step toward unlocking its energy potential with the launch of its first offshore oil drilling campaign, signaling new prospects for economic growth and regional relevance.
Ali Omar said the initiative could reshape Somalia’s economic future while strengthening its long-term strategic partnership with Türkiye.
The operation began with the arrival of the Turkish drillship Cagri Bey, which is set to commence drilling at the Curad-1 well. The vessel departed earlier this year from Taşucu port in Mersin, marking the start of a new phase in Somalia’s energy ambitions.
This milestone builds on agreements signed in 2024 between Somalia and Türkiye covering both offshore and onshore oil and gas exploration. Earlier, the Turkish seismic vessel Oruc Reis conducted extensive surveys across several offshore blocks.
If successful, the project could establish Somalia as an emerging energy player in the Horn of Africa, while reinforcing Türkiye’s strategic presence in the region.
