Senegal’s government has officially said it does not support former president Macky Sall in his attempt to become the next UN Secretary-General.
The country made it clear that it was never involved in or consulted about his candidacy, even though the idea was initially pushed within the African Union. Because many African countries disagreed, the proposal failed to get enough support.
This situation reflects growing political tensions inside Senegal, especially between Sall and the current leadership, including President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Meanwhile, the race to replace current UN chief António Guterres is still wide open. Several other candidates are being considered, and the selection process will move forward with public presentations starting in April. The final decision is expected before the new term begins in January 2027.
