A total of 246,228 people have been affected by floods since the start of this year’s rainy season in Niger, according to officials.

Hundreds of classrooms will also need to be rebuilt ahead of the start of the school year, the National Committee for Flood Prevention and Management (CNPGI) said.

According to the committee, floods have affected over 1,000 neighbourhoods and villages in 122 municipalities.

“The support provided has reached 18,962 households totaling 142,642 people with 1,896.2 tonnes of cereals in three waves of support,” it said on Friday following a meeting at the prime minister’s office.

“Firm instructions have been given so that support can reach the real beneficiaries,” an official added.
