The Nigerian government has begun evacuating its citizens from Iran as bombardments continue to hit Tehran and other major cities amid the escalating conflict in the region.

According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, embassy officials are assisting Nigerians who wish to leave by escorting them across the border into Armenia, where local authorities are helping them continue their journey safely. The commission added that no Nigerian casualties have been reported so far.

Officials did not specify the number of Nigerians currently residing in Iran or how many have already been evacuated.

The evacuation comes as several African governments move to protect their citizens abroad while the war involving Iran, Israel and the United States intensifies. Tanzania, for instance, recently evacuated its first group of nationals from the United Arab Emirates, allowing them to reunite with their families in Dar es Salaam.

According to Iranian authorities, the ongoing conflict has already killed more than 1,255 people and injured around 10,000 others, highlighting the growing humanitarian impact of the war.
