Mozambique has surprised observers by fully repaying its debt to the International Monetary Fund—over $630 million—ahead of schedule. At the start of March, the country still owed more than 515 million in Special Drawing Rights, but by the end of the month that figure had dropped to zero.

This makes Mozambique the only nation among dozens to completely settle its IMF credit during that period. Originally expected to continue repayments until 2029, the timeline has now been erased, giving the government a stronger hand in negotiations for future financial programmes.

Officials are already in talks with the IMF about a new arrangement to support economic stability. For Mozambique, a low-income country where around 60–65% of the population lives below the poverty line, this move is seen as a significant step toward rebuilding trust and attracting investment.
