Tanzania formally announces its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term, with Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi pledging to promote conflict prevention and reform of UN peacekeeping.
Addressing the General Debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Ndejembi said the African Union had formally taken note of Tanzania’s candidacy ahead of elections scheduled for June 2028.
“I therefore seize this opportunity to formally announce our candidature,” Ndejembi said. He added that Tanzania’s bid was built on its previous two terms on the Security Council and its broader commitment to multilateralism, international law and the UN’s role in maintaining international peace and security.
Tanzania previously served two terms on the Council. Ndejembi cited the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1653 in 2006 on the Great Lakes region, as well as Tanzania’s collaboration with Denmark in establishing the UN Peacebuilding Commission, as examples of its contribution to international peace and security.
‘Emerging challenges’
The vice president said Tanzania’s candidacy came as the authority of the UN Charter and established principles of international law faced “emerging challenges”, which he said were often not matched by adequate accountability.
“These developments underscore the urgent need to reaffirm multilateralism, strengthen respect for international law and reinforce the central role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security,” he said.
Ndejembi who is representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 81st General Assembly, said Tanzania would seek support from UN member states in the coming days, promising to present its vision for the Council and serve as “a strong African voice”.
The African Union’s Executive Council has recorded Tanzania’s candidacy for the 2029–2030 non-permanent Security Council term, representing the East African region. The election is scheduled for June 2028 in New York.
