Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has resigned, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan accepting his resignation, the presidency said on Tuesday.

Nchimbi submitted his resignation on August 25, asking that it take effect on September 4, according to a statement from the Directorate of Presidential Communications.

“The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honorable Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, today, August 25, 2026, received a letter of request to resign from the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Honorable Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, effective September 04, 2026. The Honorable President has accepted the request,” the statement said in a post on the official Instagram account of the Directorate of Presidential Communications.

Nchimbi earlier said he was resigning to respect Hassan’s wishes and referred to a previous commitment to step down if the president wanted a different vice president.

He said he was “convinced beyond doubt that the president desires change”.

The presidency said, “Constitutional procedures to obtain another Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania will be taken.”
