An attack on Thursday on the airport and military airbase in Niger’s capital killed 11 members of the security forces and two civilians, the government said in a statement, adding that 22 attackers were also killed.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
Gunmen had attacked the main airport in Niger’s capital of Niamey early Thursday morning, leading to an exchange of fire and explosions, witnesses and a local security official told the Associated Press.
Security forces were deployed to repel the attack after the attackers breached the airport security, said the official, who was not authorised to speak publicly about the situation. It was not immediately clear who the attackers were.
Second similar attack in 2026
An Associated Press journalist said soldiers were searching people on the road in the aftermath of the gunfire.
It was the second attack at Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey this year, after a terrorist group claimed responsibility for a similar attack in January.
