Sabastian Sawe received a hero’s welcome in Nairobi after making history at the London Marathon.

The Kenyan runner achieved what many thought was impossible—finishing a marathon in under two hours. He crossed the line in 1:59:30, breaking the previous world record by over a minute and improving his own winning time from last year by nearly three minutes.

At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Sawe was welcomed by family, fans, and officials, including Sports Minister Salim Mvurya. He said the victory was not just personal but for the whole country.

His coach, Claudio Berardelli, praised his condition leading up to the race, saying Sawe was in exceptional form, even better than in previous competitions.

Sawe wore lightweight carbon-plated shoes during the race, which are designed to improve speed and efficiency. However, supporters like Samson Nyamweya emphasized that training and discipline remain the most important factors behind such an achievement.

His journey into professional running was influenced by his uncle, Abraham Chepkirwok, an Olympian who helped guide his early career.

Sawe’s historic run is being celebrated not just as a sporting victory, but as a moment of national pride and inspiration.
