In Nigeria, gunmen attacked an unregistered orphanage in Kogi State, kidnapping at least 23 children. The incident happened near the state capital, Lokoja, in a remote area.
Security forces quickly responded and managed to rescue 15 of the children. However, at least eight are still missing, along with the wife of the orphanage’s owner, who was also abducted during the raid. Authorities say operations are ongoing to find the remaining victims and arrest those responsible.
Officials revealed that the orphanage was operating illegally, without government registration or oversight, and was located in an isolated area. This may have made it an easier target for attackers.
No group has claimed responsibility yet, but kidnappings like this have become increasingly common in Nigeria. Armed groups often target schools and vulnerable communities, especially in rural areas where security is limited.
The country has been facing multiple security challenges, including attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, as well as criminal gangs who carry out kidnappings for ransom.
This latest attack highlights the ongoing risks faced by children and communities in parts of Nigeria, and the urgent need for better protection and security.
