A group of about 1,100 Afghans who once supported US military effor Afghan Allies Face Uncertain Futurets are now facing an uncertain future after the United States paused their resettlement. These individuals—including interpreters and their families—are currently being held at a US-run facility in Doha, waiting for a decision on where they will go next.

Reports from ABC News and The New York Times suggest that the US government is considering sending them either back to Afghanistan or relocating them to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Officials from the US State Department described this as “voluntary resettlement,” but haven’t shared clear details.

Advocates are strongly concerned. Shawn VanDiver, head of AfghanEvac, warned that this plan could put lives at risk. He argues that sending Afghans to Congo might actually be a way to eventually return them to Afghanistan, where many could face serious danger due to their past cooperation with US forces.

The concern is heightened because Congo itself is struggling with massive displacement caused by ongoing conflict. According to the UN Refugee Agency, millions of people there are already displaced, making it one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

In simple terms, critics say this plan could move vulnerable people from one dangerous situation into another, without truly solving the problem.
