The Organization of Islamic Cooperation strongly criticized Israel for appointing a diplomatic representative to Somaliland.

In its statement, the OIC said the move violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. It reaffirmed its full support for Somalia’s internationally recognized government and emphasized the importance of respecting international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

The controversy comes after Israel announced mutual recognition with Somaliland in late 2025 and recently appointed its first ambassador to the region.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since operated as a self-governing entity. However, it is not officially recognized as an independent state by the international community, and Somalia continues to consider it part of its territory.

The OIC called for all countries to respect Somalia’s unity and avoid actions that could undermine regional stability.
