Here’s the story in everyday language: Ghana’s Football Association has suddenly ended Otto Addo’s contract as head coach of the national team, just two and a half months before the World Cup begins. The decision came after a string of disappointing friendly matches, including a 2-1 loss to Germany and a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria. Ghana has now lost four friendlies in a row.

Addo, who previously coached Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, had returned for a second spell after leaving his role at Borussia Dortmund. Despite his strong playing career—winning the Bundesliga with Dortmund and representing Ghana at the 2006 World Cup—his recent results weren’t enough to keep him in charge.

Ghana will now need to quickly find a replacement before their opening match against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. The team is in Group L alongside Croatia, England, and Panama, making preparation even more critical.
