Russia announced Monday that it has expelled Jance Gerardus, the second secretary of the British Embassy in Moscow, accusing him of intelligence activities. The Federal Security Service (FSB) said Gerardus provided false information when applying to enter Russia and attempted to obtain sensitive data during informal meetings with economic experts.
The FSB claimed his actions showed signs of “intelligence and subversive activities” threatening national security. Gerardus’ accreditation was revoked, and he has two weeks to leave the country.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also summoned Britain’s temporary charge d’affaires, Danae Dholakia, to deliver a formal protest note and confirm the expulsion order.
