3571 drc launches probe after about 2 million seized at airport

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have launched a formal investigation after millions of US dollars were seized at N’djili International Airport in Kinshasa. Justice Minister Guillaume Ngefa confirmed that $1.9 million was intercepted, though reports suggest the total could reach $3.53 million.

Ngefa ordered the funds placed under seal and directed prosecutors to investigate their origin and any potential criminal liability. Under Congo’s anti-money laundering law, the money will be transferred to the Central Bank, with case files submitted to the National Financial Intelligence Unit (CENAREF).

The move comes just days after President Félix Tshisekedi established a specialized criminal court to tackle economic and financial crimes, including corruption, fraud, money laundering, and embezzlement. The airport seizure highlights the government’s intensified crackdown on illicit financial flows.
